Internship Spotlight

Securing an internship can feel like an incredibly daunting task for a college student, especially if it feels like everyone around you has one already. However, I found that securing an internship in a field I’m passionate about is a lot more simple than I thought it would be, thus relieving a lot of anxiety about advancing my career in the advertising world.

I found my internship at the Irish music curation company, Youbloom, through Handshake. My goal after school is to work in the music industry in some capacity, and I found Youbloom very quickly. The application process was different from many other internships and jobs I’ve applied for in the past, with questions asking me about my taste in music and current favorite artists. The application process was quick, easy, and fun. Luckily, I heard back after a few days with an offer to join the Youbloom marketing team.

I’ve been interning at Youbloom since January 2022, where I have mostly created content for the brand. Youbloom focuses on curating live music experiences around the world, specifically for smaller , unsigned artists. The brand operates on a fan-requesting system that helps establish ties between artists and venues in cities globally. They’ve curated a few live festival type shows in Dublin and Los Angeles, but with the ongoing pandemic, many of the shows have happened remotely. During my internship, I have  curated Spotify playlists, pitched blog ideas, and helped create content that was distributed to those that work with the brand. Recently, I have been sitting in on weekly calls that require me to interact with other interns that are also interested in advertising, marketing, and communications.

My internship has shown me what it’s like to work in the in-house marketing department of a smaller and independent company, as opposed to a larger agency that's a part of a bigger media conglomerate. Since I began at Youbloom, I have learned how to pitch ideas and incorporate feedback, mainly that I have received from the marketing manager and the CEO. I’m lucky to have been able to find an internship in a field I’m passionate about. If music marketing is something you are passionate about, I would highly recommend interning at Youbloom. The process of finding, applying for, and securing an internship doesn’t need to be as scary as it looks from the outside.
